Twice a year, on Easter Monday and August 15th, the Place de la Résistance in Antraigues-sur-Volane transforms into a flea market and art crafts market organized by ASCA (Association of Shopkeepers and Craftsmen of Antraigues). About twenty exhibitors—flea market dealers, antique dealers, and creator artisans—offer their pieces in the incomparable setting of this village perched on the heights of the Ardèche Cévennes.
The peculiarity of this event lies in the harmonious blend of traditional flea market and contemporary art crafts. On one hand, the flea market stalls offer antique furniture, tableware, trinkets, books, and decorative objects; on the other, creator artisans exhibit their works—ceramics, jewelry, sculptures, woodwork, textiles—reflecting the dynamism of the artistic and artisanal life that has always characterized Antraigues. This mix gives the event an original character, attracting both traditional bargain hunters and art lovers and passing tourists.
Easter Monday kicks off the village's spring tourist season, taking advantage of the influx of the first visitors of the long Easter weekend to offer festive and commercial activity in the heart of the village. On August 15th, in the heart of the Ardèche summer, the flea market benefits from maximum tourist attendance and a summer atmosphere that makes this day one of the liveliest of the year in Antraigues.
Antraigues-sur-Volane is an Ardèche village of about 500 inhabitants (postal code 07530), perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the confluence of the Volane and the Auzène, about fifteen kilometers east of Aubenas. Its exceptional natural setting—wooded hills, panoramas of the Cévennes and the foothills of the Alps—makes it one of the most popular villages in the department, especially in summer.
Antraigues is also a village of artists. It was notably the chosen residence of the singer Jean Ferrat, who lived there for several decades and made the village's name known far beyond the borders of Ardèche. This cultural heritage has lastingly marked the village's atmosphere, which still counts numerous artists, art craftsmen, and creation workshops today. The Place de la Résistance, the beating heart of the village and the location of the flea market, is surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and artisanal shops, creating an Ardèche Provençal village ambiance that is particularly lively on market days.
The territory of Antraigues is part of the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d'Ardèche, a vast preserved area that extends over the high lands of Ardèche. The chestnut grove landscapes, the Cévennes ridges visible in clear weather, and the air quality are permanent assets. The village is near Vals-les-Bains, a famous spa town, and the Volane valley which leads up to the Ardèche plateau.
ASCA—Association of Shopkeepers and Craftsmen of Antraigues—is the organization that drives and animates the economic and festive life of the village. Its role goes beyond the simple defense of professional interests: it initiates the main events that punctuate the year in Antraigues, contributing to maintaining the village's attractiveness and fostering loyalty among tourists, second-home owners, and residents of surrounding communities.
The organization of the biannual flea market demonstrates ASCA's ability to mobilize local energies and create events that benefit the entire economic sector of the village: shopkeepers, restaurateurs, accommodation providers, and artisans benefit from the visitor flows generated by these events. The quality of the organization, consistent from one edition to the next, has allowed the Antraigues flea market to become a lasting fixture in the schedules of bargain hunters and tourists passing through Ardèche.
Exhibitors wishing to participate in one or both of the annual flea markets can contact ASCA to reserve their spot. The capacity of about 20 exhibitors in the Place de la Résistance ensures a human-scale, friendly, and high-quality event.
Visitors benefit from free entry. The Easter flea market is generally held in the morning and early afternoon; the August 15th one, in the heart of summer, extends over a longer day. It is advisable to combine a visit to the flea market with a walk through the village and lunch in one of the restaurants on the Place de la Résistance or adjacent streets.
Antraigues-sur-Volane is accessible from Aubenas via the D578 (about 15 km northeast) or via the D243 through Vals-les-Bains. Parking can be difficult on August 15th; shuttles or parking at the village entrance may sometimes be provided by the municipality during high season.
