Seaside car boot sale on the Côte Bleue, between the fishing port and the Provençal pine forest
The Car boot sale of Sausset-les-Pins is an unmissable event organized by the Comité des Fêtes de Sausset-les-Pins on the Parcours Naturel of avenue Pierre Matraja, in this emblematic seaside resort of the Côte Bleue. Nestled between Carry-le-Rouet and Martigues, Sausset-les-Pins offers an exceptional setting for a day of bargain hunting in the open air, with views of the Mediterranean and the small fishing port. The Charles-Roux castle, built in 1854 in the middle of a three-hundred-hectare pine forest, dominates the village and recalls the history of this former fishing village that has become a popular seaside resort.
Each year, the seaside resort of Sausset-les-Pins hosts its car boot sale on the Parcours Naturel of avenue Pierre Matraja, organized by the Comité des Fêtes de Sausset-les-Pins. More than a hundred private sellers invest this shaded area to offer objects, clothes, books, toys, and all sorts of finds for sale, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry is free, and refreshments and fast food are available on site, allowing visitors to fully enjoy this day of seaside bargain hunting.
Formerly a fishing hamlet attached to the commune of Châteauneuf-les-Martigues until 1923, Sausset-les-Pins has become a renowned seaside resort in the Bouches-du-Rhône region. In 1854, the Marseille merchant Jean-Baptiste Charles-Roux, owner of a soap factory and an oil mill, acquired a three-hundred-hectare pine forest and had his castle built there, visible from afar by sailors. His son Jules Charles-Roux contributed to the development of the port and the tourist boom of the commune. The small fishing port, developed between 1863 and 1883, still retains its authenticity today with its colorful pointed boats and restaurant terraces facing the boats.
Sausset-les-Pins is distinguished by the presence of the Marine Park of the Côte Bleue, created in 1983, which extends over 15,000 hectares along 28 kilometers of coastline. This park, a pioneer in the Mediterranean, protects marine biodiversity thanks to artificial reefs submerged off the coast of Sausset-les-Pins and two fully protected marine reserves. The crystal-clear waters of the Côte Bleue, the rocky coves, and the preserved seabed make Sausset-les-Pins a prime location for diving and swimming.
The stalls at the Sausset-les-Pins car boot sale offer the characteristic diversity of Provençal car boot sales: crockery and pottery, books and comics, clothing and accessories, toys and games, knick-knacks and decorative objects, small furniture, and garden tools. The Parcours Naturel on avenue Pierre Matraja, lined with maritime pines, offers a shaded and pleasant setting for strolling among the stalls. The sea air, the song of the cicadas, and the Mediterranean light create a unique atmosphere, typical of the open-air markets of the Côte Bleue.
Before or after the car boot sale, a walk in Sausset-les-Pins is a must. The fishing port, with its pointed boats and nets spread out on the quays, offers a picturesque sight. The Charles-Roux castle, overlooking the village from its pine forest, bears witness to the aristocratic history of the commune. The sandy and pebble beaches, the coastal paths leading towards Carry-le-Rouet, and the wild coves allow you to extend your day by the water. The headquarters of the Marine Park of the Côte Bleue, located in Sausset-les-Pins, offers exhibitions on Mediterranean underwater fauna and flora.
