Grand flea market in September on Place des Marronniers, at the foot of Bourges Cathedral
The Brocante Place des Marronniers de Bourges, organized by the Association du Quartier Émile Martin - Jean Baffier, is one of the highlights of the back-to-school season for bargain hunters in the Berry region. Every year in September, around 200 exhibitors—professionals, individuals, and neighborhood residents—take over the Place des Marronniers, just a stone's throw from Saint-Étienne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. From 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., visitors stroll among the stalls in an exceptional setting, with the possibility in the evening of attending the Nuits Lumière light show that illuminates Bourges' monuments.
The Place des Marronniers, nestled in the historic heart of Bourges, provides an exceptional setting for this back-to-school flea market. Shaded by large, century-old chestnut trees, a few dozen meters from Saint-Étienne Cathedral—a masterpiece of Gothic art inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1992—the square offers an intimate yet majestic backdrop for this large-scale event.
The Association du Quartier Émile Martin - Jean Baffier, named after two emblematic streets in the neighborhood, unites residents and shopkeepers around common projects. The annual flea market, nicknamed "Brocante à Mimile" by regulars, is its flagship event. It perpetuates a tradition of conviviality and neighborhood animation that the locals are proud of.
Around 200 exhibitors set up on the Place des Marronniers and in the adjacent streets: antique dealers, individuals clearing out their attics, and neighborhood residents. The stalls offer an eclectic assortment: antique furniture, porcelain tableware, silverware, books, postcards, trinkets, vintage clothing, vinyl records, and collectibles. The diversity of sellers ensures prices ranging from a few cents for a trinket to several hundred euros for an antique piece.
Visitors who extend their day until nightfall have the privilege of attending the Nuits Lumière in Bourges, a free sound and light show that illuminates the facades of the cathedral and the city's historic monuments. This unique combination—flea market by day, light show by night—makes this day a complete cultural experience.
