A themed flea market for music lovers and enthusiasts
The Lavaur music flea market is a distinctive event on the Tarn calendar. Set up on Place Pasteur, it brings together seventy exhibitors around a single theme: music. Vintage or secondhand instruments, vinyl records, CDs, sheet music, audio gear, merchandise: this specialist sale attracts music lovers, amateur musicians and collectors. A Sunday in May entirely devoted to the passion for music, in the cathedral town of the Vaurais.
Themed flea markets are rare, and that is exactly what makes the Lavaur event so appealing. Rather than letting each seller lay out a general miscellany, the idea here is to impose a common thread: music. The result is a fully specialised day, where visitors know exactly why they have come, and where sellers know they are addressing an informed audience.
The range of goods is considerable. You'll find secondhand musical instruments (acoustic and electric guitars, synths, keyboards, violins, flutes, drums, percussion), audio equipment (amplifiers, mixing desks, turntables, speakers, headphones, microphones), records by the thousand — 33 and 45 rpm vinyl, CDs, cassettes — from pop to classical via rock, jazz and French chanson. Add sheet music, methods, specialist books, musicians' biographies, concert posters, merchandise, t-shirts and music DVDs. Rare-vinyl collectors and conservatory students mingle happily here.
The event is held on Place Pasteur, in central Lavaur. The town, a former sub-prefecture and historic seat of the Vaurais, counts among its monuments the splendid Saint-Alain Cathedral, the bishop's garden and the traces of its Cathar past. The pleasant town centre lets you extend your flea-market visit with a stroll through shopping streets or a terrace lunch.
Each exhibitor brings their own universe: one was a professional musician clearing out some of their gear, another a vinyl collector thinning their shelves, a third offers secondhand instruments for children starting at the conservatory. This variety of profiles fuels rich conversations, valuable advice, sometimes an impromptu demonstration on a tested instrument. The attractive pitch rate (€3.50 per metre) guarantees a generous offer.
Arrive as soon as it opens if you are after rare pieces: the good deals go fast. Bring a protective cover for any instrument bought, plus bubble wrap for vinyl and speakers. Don't hesitate to try instruments before buying — most sellers happily allow it. For more novice music lovers, this is the chance to start a vinyl collection on a budget or to find a first affordable instrument.
