Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (13210) is a city of art and history nestled at the foot of the Alpilles massif, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Birthplace of Nostradamus, born on December 14, 1503, in a house in the historic center, Saint-Rémy is also home to the archaeological site of Glanum, a Gallo-Roman city founded in the 3rd century BC, of which the triumphal arch and the mausoleum of the Julii remain, remarkably preserved. The city's heritage also includes the Saint-Paul de Mausole monastery, a former Romanesque priory that became famous for hosting Vincent Van Gogh from May 1889 to May 1890. During this year of voluntary confinement, the Dutch painter created more than 150 major works there, including the famous *Starry Night*.
The Alpilles Regional Natural Park, which surrounds Saint-Rémy, offers a backdrop of limestone landscapes, ancient olive groves, and fragrant garrigue. This Provençal massif, which has inspired so many artists, is a popular hiking and discovery area for visitors. The town itself charms with its medieval streets, its fountains, its squares shaded by plane trees, and its famous Wednesday morning Provençal market. May 1st, a public holiday, is the ideal opportunity to combine a visit to this remarkable heritage with a friendly day of treasure hunting on Place Général-de-Gaulle.
The car boot sale is organized by Les Cavaliers Errants, an equestrian association based in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The profits from the event contribute to the financing of the association's activities. This partnership between the equestrian world and the car boot sale tradition illustrates the vitality of the community fabric of this Provençal town, where local initiatives punctuate the village life throughout the year.
