Winter flea market at the Jouarre community hall, city of the Merovingian abbey
The Jouarre flea market is a winter event held every February at the community hall of this Briard town famous for its Notre-Dame abbey founded in the 7th century. Organized from 9am to 5:30pm, the event offers indoor and outdoor stands in a warm atmosphere that attracts bargain hunters, collectors, and families from the communes of northern Seine-et-Marne. Ideal for starting the year under the sign of good deals.
When the end-of-year festivities give way to the grayness of February, the small town of Jouarre, nestled on a plateau overlooking the Marne valley, offers its inhabitants and bargain hunters from the surrounding area a warm appointment: the winter flea market. Organized at the community hall, with deployment both inside and outside, this event is one of the rare winter flea markets in the northern region of the department, making it a valuable opportunity for enthusiasts who struggle to wait until spring.
What makes this flea market original is precisely its calendar: early February, in the middle of winter, when few other events of this type are organized in Seine-et-Marne. Exhibitors benefit from a heated indoor space at the community hall (8€ per meter), or can set up outside (3.50€ per meter). This dual option, rare in flea markets, allows everyone to participate, regardless of weather conditions. Visitors enjoy a welcome covered space when the wind picks up on the Briard plateau.
Jouarre is no ordinary commune: it is the cradle of a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century, one of the oldest in France. The Notre-Dame abbey of Jouarre, still active today, notably houses famous Merovingian crypts where several saints from the early days of Frankish Christianity rest. The main buildings date from the 18th century and bear witness to the rise of the abbey under the Ancien Régime. This exceptional heritage gives Jouarre a fragrance of history that permeates the entire city.
Beyond the commercial aspect, this flea market is a real highlight of local life during winter. The people of Jouarre gladly meet there, chat, exchange news, warm up with a coffee or hot chocolate offered at the refreshment stand. You meet regulars, enthusiasts who would not miss this gathering for anything in the world, but also many visitors from nearby La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, Coulommiers, Meaux, or even more distant communes. The interior of the community hall allows for peaceful bargain hunting.
As in any good flea market, the offer is eclectic: children's and adult clothing, toys, books, crockery, trinkets, small furniture, decorative objects, tools, records, video games, or DVDs, and sometimes a few beautiful old pieces that will delight enthusiasts. Prices are generally very affordable, and exhibitors are open to negotiation. For families, it is an opportunity to make good deals on clothes and toys, while sharing a pleasant moment.
