Grand 1st May car boot sale organized by the Moulis Festival Committee
Every May 1st, the Moulis Festival Committee organizes a large car boot sale in the hamlet of Aubert, near the mill. This friendly event brings together individuals and collectors in a green setting in the heart of Couserans in Ariège. Approximately twenty-five pitches are available for rent, with stalls open from 7 am to 5 pm. Alongside the bargain hunting, food and drinks are available on-site with sandwiches, fries, millas, crepes, cakes, and beverages, making this day a true moment of village conviviality at the foot of the Pyrenees.
In the Lez valley, in the heart of Couserans in Ariège, the commune of Moulis perpetuates a festive and popular tradition every May 1st: the grand car boot sale organized by its Festival Committee. The event takes place in the hamlet of Aubert, a charming district of this commune spread over more than 3,600 hectares, ranging from 420 to 1,600 meters in altitude.
Moulis is a commune like no other in Couserans. Crossed by the Lez river, this locality of about 800 inhabitants spread across several hamlets benefits from a preserved natural environment, between dense forests and green meadows. The hamlet of Aubert, where the car boot sale takes place, enjoys a picturesque location near an old mill, recalling the rural past of the commune.
The Moulis site is also known for housing an underground laboratory of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research), famous for breeding the proteus, a mysterious troglodyte amphibian. This scientific peculiarity gives the commune a renown that extends far beyond its borders, attracting researchers and nature enthusiasts every year.
The Aubert car boot sale opens its doors at 7 am for early birds and closes at 5 pm. Approximately twenty-five pitches of a few linear meters are available for exhibitors, individuals wishing to clear out their cellars, attics, and closets. Registration is done by phone, with limited spaces to ensure the quality of the event and the comfort of visitors.
Bargain hunters will find a varied selection of everyday objects, clothing, furniture, books, and trinkets, reflecting the domestic history of the families of Couserans. The relaxed and rural atmosphere makes this flea market particularly endearing.
The Moulis Festival Committee doesn't just organize the car boot sale: it also provides full catering on-site throughout the day. Sandwiches, fries, millas (a typical Couserans corn cake), crepes, homemade cakes, and cold drinks are offered at reasonable prices, making this car boot sale a convivial day to take the time to stroll and eat between finds.
Moulis is part of Couserans, a region with Gascon roots structured by the course of the Salat river and its tributaries. This region in the Pyrenean foothills is renowned for its spectacular landscapes, its preserved villages, and the warmth of its inhabitants. Numerous outdoor activities are available: paragliding from the communal launch site, rock climbing, and hiking on marked trails. The May 1st car boot sale is naturally part of this culture of sharing and celebration that characterizes Couserans.
