The Seix Car Boot Sale, Pyrenean Bargains Between Two Streams

Twice a year, in spring, the village of Seix hosts its car boot sale in the center of the village. These two events — one in March, the other in May — mark the beginning of the good season in this mountain commune in Ariège, nestled at the confluence of several streams flowing down from the heights of Couserans to join the Salat. The active and engaged community life of Seix drives these friendly events that contribute to the village's animation throughout the year.

Seix, Emblematic Village of Haut-Couserans

Seix (09140) is one of the most characteristic villages of Couserans, the historic region of western Ariège. With a population of just over 700 inhabitants, it covers a remarkable area of 87 square kilometers, from the banks of the Salat to the Spanish border peaks. The village is located at the confluence of the Salat and several streams, in a landscape of wooded slopes of beech and fir trees, limestone cliffs, and summer pastures.

The built heritage of Seix is remarkable. The Château du Roy, dating from the 15th century, overlooks the village with its medieval silhouette. The Saint-Étienne church, in baroque style, is integrated into the village's defensive system. The old houses, with their gray stone facades and slate roofs, form a coherent and picturesque ensemble that has earned Seix its reputation as a beautiful village of Couserans.

A Double Spring Appointment

The March car boot sale is the first event of the year in Seix's festive calendar. Still in the middle of winter, it psychologically marks the beginning of renewal in the mountains, where the snow sometimes takes a long time to melt. The May edition, on the contrary, takes place in a setting of awakened nature, with green meadows and streams swollen by snowmelt. Both editions offer various items from Couserans homes: mountain furniture, farm crockery, tools, clothing, books, trinkets, and objects of all kinds.

Seix and the Haut-Salat Valley

Seix is the ideal starting point for exploring the Haut-Salat valley and the heights of Couserans. The Seix forest, one of the largest and best-preserved in Ariège, is home to deer, wild boars, badgers, and many species of mountain birds. The Pyrenean passes — Col de la Core, Col d'Eychelle, Col de Pause — open up to the border ridges and breathtaking views of the Pyrenees. The Seix via ferrata, set up on the limestone cliffs above the village, attracts thrill-seekers.

The Guzet-Neige ski resort, about fifteen kilometers from Seix by road, completes the four-season tourist offering of this sector of Ariège Couserans.

Practical Information
