Summer car boot sale in the village of Lizières, between Gartempe and Sédelle in Creuse
The Lizières Car Boot Sale is an annual summer event organized every July in the village of this small commune of 238 inhabitants nestled between the rivers Gartempe and Sédelle, at an altitude of 418 meters in western Creuse. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., exhibitors offer furniture, trinkets, tableware, and second-hand items to bargain hunters coming to enjoy this flea market day in a preserved rural setting. Lizières, a member of the Monts et Vallées Ouest Creuse community of communes, offers a hilly landscape of meadows and woods typical of the Limousin bocage, near the Painters' Valley of Crozant and Fresselines.
Every year in July, the village of Lizières hosts its summer car boot sale. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., exhibitors set up their stalls in the village streets to offer bargain hunters furniture, trinkets, tableware, toys, books, and all sorts of second-hand items. This popular event, in a village of 238 inhabitants at 418 meters altitude, embodies the charm of country flea markets in Creuse.
The commune of Lizières is crossed by two remarkable waterways: the Gartempe and the Sédelle, tributaries of the Creuse which carve out deep valleys in the granite plateau. This landscape of Limousin bocage, with its meadows surrounded by hedges, its oak and chestnut woods, and its granite farms, forms a preserved and peaceful natural setting. Fishing enthusiasts particularly appreciate these trout rivers flowing through shaded valleys.
Lizières is located near the famous Painters' Valley, between Crozant and Fresselines, where Claude Monet, Armand Guillaumin, and many Impressionist artists set up their easels at the end of the 19th century. The confluences of the Creuse and the Sédelle, with their granite cliffs and play of light, inspired canvases now housed in the world's greatest museums. The Lizières car boot sale is an opportunity to discover this corner of Creuse imbued with art and nature.
Western Creuse, where Lizières is located, is a preserved bocage area, classified among the remarkable landscapes of Limousin. The granite houses with slate or flat tile roofs, the hay barns, and the dry stone walls that delineate the plots form a rural heritage of great authenticity. The car boot sale is often an opportunity to find items from this heritage: old agricultural tools, pottery, copper or cast iron kitchen utensils forged by the artisans of yesteryear.
