Annual flea market in the star-shaped city of Rocroi, a stronghold of the Ardennes
Every summer in August, the famous star-shaped city of Rocroi hosts its annual flea market. In this town fortified by Vauban, between 50 and 100 exhibitors take over the streets and the parade ground for a day of flea market and car boot sale. An exceptional historical setting for treasure hunting in the Ardennes, on the Belgian border.
Every summer in August, the town of Rocroi hosts its annual flea market. Between 50 and 100 exhibitors set up in the streets and spaces of this unique star-shaped city in the Ardennes, offering furniture, tableware, books, trinkets, and collectibles in an absolutely exceptional historical setting.
Rocroi is one of the most unique and fascinating towns in the French Ardennes. Perched on a plateau at an altitude of 390 meters, a few kilometers from the Belgian border, it is distinguished by its five-pointed star layout, a fortification model designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban in the 17th century for Louis XIV. The perfectly preserved ramparts and bastions surround an intimate town center, with its square parade ground and red brick houses typical of the region. Rocroi is also known for the Battle of Rocroi on May 19, 1643, during which the young Duke of Enghien (future Grand Condé) inflicted a decisive defeat on the Spanish army, ending Spanish military supremacy in Europe.
The Rocroi Flea Market draws much of its charm from the exceptional setting that surrounds it. Treasure hunting among Vauban's ramparts, on the parade ground where the echoes of the great battle of 1643 still resonate, is an experience few flea markets in France can offer. The exhibitors are spread across the square and the streets within the ramparts, offering a varied selection of antiques, flea market finds, and car boot sale items.
With 50 to 100 exhibitors, the Rocroi Flea Market remains a human-scale event, very different from large commercial fairs. This modest size is precisely what gives it its charm: you take the time to chat with exhibitors, rummage through boxes, discover unusual items related to local history, and enjoy the medieval and baroque setting of Rocroi. Prices are generally accessible, as exhibitors are mostly individuals and small local dealers.
The Rocroi Flea Market is held every year in August (usually the third Sunday) in the historic center of Rocroi. Entry is free for visitors. Rocroi is accessible from Charleville-Mézières (about 40 km via the N43), Givet (about 30 km), and the Belgian border (a few kilometers away). Parking is available outside the ramparts. The town is worth a longer visit for its ramparts, its Battle Museum, and its panoramic views of the Ardennes forest.
The 2026 Annual Brocante of Rocroi is scheduled for August in the historic center of the star-shaped city. 50 to 100 exhibitors are expected for this summer event.
