The annual flea market of the Comite des fetes in a small rural village of Yvelines
The Marcq flea market is the great annual event of this tiny rural village in Yvelines, located near Neauphle-le-Chateau. Organised by the Comite des fetes, it brings together around 120 exhibitors around the village hall for a warm day of outdoor bargain hunting. Refreshment bar and barbecue on site make the event a real village celebration, emblematic of the authenticity of small rural events in the department.
With around 440 inhabitants, Marcq is one of the smallest villages in Yvelines, nestled in the preserved countryside between Neauphle-le-Chateau and Montfort-l'Amaury. This corner of rural plateau, far from the Ile-de-France bustle, has preserved its village identity with its church, its town hall and its few farms and old houses. Every year, the village comes alive for a day for its great annual flea market, organised by the Comite des fetes, which attracts bargain hunters and the curious from all around.
As in many small rural municipalities, it is the Comite des fetes that carries the Marcq flea market. This volunteer association mobilises its members several weeks before the event to prepare the signposting, manage the registrations of the 120 exhibitors, set up the pitches and organise the catering on site. This behind-the-scenes work is what makes village events live and gives them this particular atmosphere, warm and authentic, not found in large urban flea markets.
With 120 exhibitors, the Marcq flea market is perfectly sized for the village: important enough to offer a nice variety of items to visitors, but not so imposing that one would feel lost. The stalls, essentially held by private individuals who have come to empty their attics and cellars, offer a real rural bric-a-brac: children's clothes and toys, crockery, small furniture, garden tools, books, records, decoration items, household linen, childcare. The sale of new and food items is prohibited, preserving the authentic character of the flea market.
Beyond the bargain hunting, the Marcq flea market has the air of a great village celebration. A refreshment bar is held by the volunteers of the Comite des fetes, and a barbecue offers sausages, merguez and chips at lunchtime. These catering moments are an opportunity to sit at a shared table, chat with neighbours, meet the inhabitants and enjoy a friendly atmosphere typical of rural events. For families, it is a complete outing: you hunt for bargains in the morning, have lunch on site, continue in the afternoon.
Experienced bargain hunters know it: it is in this type of small village flea markets that the best deals sometimes hide. Less publicised than large urban flea markets, they attract less competition between visitors, and prices remain very low because exhibitors are essentially inhabitants who are mainly looking to get rid of items that have become bulky. Country furniture, old tools, family crockery and everyday items from past decades naturally find their place and delight lovers of authenticity.
The Marcq flea market is the ideal opportunity to discover this lesser-known part of Yvelines, between agricultural plains and forests. Visitors can extend their day with a walk in the surrounding area: nearby Neauphle-le-Chateau with its old centre, Montfort-l'Amaury and its medieval heritage, or the Rambouillet forest a few kilometres away. It is all the richness of rural Yvelines that offers itself to bargain hunters who take the time to move a little away from the main roads.
