Around twenty Provençal santon makers in the Chapel of the College
Every Christmas, the Chapel of the College in Carpentras turns into a little world of clay. In the heart of the historic centre, the Noëls d'Argile santons market gathers around twenty-five Provençal santon makers presenting and selling their work: traditional figurines, nativity accessories, miniature scenery, plus modelling and painting workshops for all ages. Ten days to step into the magic of a Provençal Christmas.
Built in the 17th century, the Chapel of the College offers an exceptional setting for the santons market. Baroque vaults and soft light enhance the hundreds of santons displayed by the craftsmen. The atmosphere is quiet and reverent, echoing the humble origins of the santon: a miniature home nativity.
The santon, 'little saint' in Provençal, emerged in Provence in the late 18th century when the Revolution closed the churches and families recreated the nativity at home. Carpentras is a hub for this craft, and Noëls d'Argile is its showcase. About twenty-five santon makers from across Provence present hand-modelled, fired and painted pieces.
Over 500 santons: hand-painted clay figures, fabric-dressed santons, miniatures from 1 to 3 cm, collectible large pieces, plus nativity accessories — Provençal mas, mills, bridges, olive trees, fountains, miniature crockery, fabrics and dry-stone sets.
Every year the market offers modelling and painting workshops for children and adults, a lovely way to pass on the craft. The santon makers take time to share their techniques, from choosing the clay to firing and decoration.
The santons market is part of the Noëls Insolites programme alongside a large Provençal nativity at the Tourist Office, gourmet market, cathedral lights, carriage rides and giant trees.
From 15 to 24 December 2026, the Chapel of the College in Carpentras hosts the new edition of Noëls d'Argile Santons Market. Around twenty-five Provençal santon makers will present and sell clay figures, nativity accessories and miniature scenery. Part of the Noëls Insolites, with modelling and painting workshops and free entry.
