Browsing in Vendée's smallest Petite Cité de Caractère
Mallièvre is exceptional: Vendée's smallest commune (under 200 inhabitants), yet classified Petite Cité de Caractère. Perched on a rocky spur above the Sèvre Nantaise, it preserves paved lanes, 18th-century weavers' houses, a Romanesque church and medieval remains.
Each summer the commune hosts heritage events including a medieval fair, around which a flea market may be held. The event celebrates both historical heritage and local community life in a truly unique Vendée setting.
Imagine a flea market where stalls set up under medieval porches, along paved lanes, near the 15th-century fountain. The contrast between everyday objects and historic village setting gives browsing a unique, theatrical flavour. Families come as much for atmosphere as for bric-a-brac.
Famous for its 'Maison des Tisserands' recalling textile past, and for exceptionally preserved heritage. In the haut-bocage Vendée, 10 min from Les Herbiers and Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, 15 min from Puy du Fou (Les Epesses). An unmissable stop for Vendée rural heritage lovers.
