Vendée commune of nearly 1,600, far South Vendée on the Charente-Maritime border (Marans 5 min). Its name reveals its past: once a real island in the marshes before their gradual drainage (11th-18th c.), L'Île-d'Elle sat on a mound emerging from the Poitevin Marsh. Now the commune spans drained polder, dike-villages and remaining wetlands.
Keeps medieval traces: Saint-Pierre church (12th-13th c.) among the area's oldest, with remarkable Romanesque portal. Some old houses, Marsh architecture traces.
Border location: Marans 5 min, La Rochelle 30 min, Fontenay-le-Comte 20 min. Two-department clientele.
