Mazamet's neighbourhood brocante
Every June, Place de la Lauze in Mazamet hosts its traditional neighbourhood flea market. Run by the local district committee with the Ville de Mazamet, this Sunday event gathers Black Mountain residents, bargain hunters from Castres and Aussillon around varied stalls. A modest but authentic event typical of the former wool-processing capital.
Mazamet, nestled between Castres and the Black Mountain, carries a long tradition of community life inherited from its industrial past. Once the world capital of 'délainage' (processing wool-bearing sheepskins), the town retains a strong working-class identity where district committees shape the year. The La Lauze flea market is one of the finest examples.
Set in a residential area of Mazamet, Place de la Lauze offers a setting suited to a human-scale flea market. Stalls line the pavements and fill the square, allowing visitors to browse freely. It's a neighbours' market, with warm exchanges and plentiful chatter.
Exhibitors, mostly private sellers from Mazamet and neighbouring towns (Aussillon, Pont-de-l'Arn), unpack the classic Tarn brocante inventory: crockery and porcelain, linen, adult and children's clothing, toys, books, comic books, trinkets, small furniture, records, tools. Occasional pieces linked to Mazamet's industrial past slip into the stalls for local history fans.
Mazamet is a perfect base to explore the Black Mountain. The Mazamet footbridge, 140 metres above the Arnette valley, is worth the detour, as is the perched village of Hautpoul, the town's historic cradle.
La Lauze is not a large event: it is an authentic, popular neighbourhood flea market. Its human scale is its main asset. Come for low prices, conversation and the pulse of Mazamet life.
