Traditional May 1st flea market at the Gunstett community hall, a village in northern Alsace
The Gunstett Flea Market is a traditional May 1st event in northern Alsace. Organised by the village animation committee, it is held at the community hall and around the village, gathering around forty private exhibitors offering a wide range of items at low prices: adult and children's clothing, toys, books, trinkets, crockery, small furniture, decorative items, tools, vinyls, postcards and collectibles. In this charming Alsatian village located between Haguenau and the German border, May 1st is an opportunity for a convivial and festive moment, with refreshments and catering on site in aid of local associative life.
The Gunstett Flea Market is part of the long French tradition of May 1st events, an emblematic public holiday during which tens of thousands of brocantes and car boot sales enliven towns and villages throughout France. In Alsace, and particularly in the Bas-Rhin, this tradition is especially vibrant with dozens of events spread across the department. In Gunstett, a small village located in the Outre-Forêt north of Haguenau, the flea market is organised each year by the local animation committee, which mobilises volunteers and residents to offer a convivial day to the population. Around forty private exhibitors come to offer their items, in a family-friendly and cheerful atmosphere typical of small Alsatian village flea markets.
Visitors discover on the stalls of this flea market an eclectic range of items: adult and children's clothing (new or lightly worn), toys for all ages, books, comics, vinyls and CDs, trinkets, crockery, glassware, small furniture, decorative items, household linen, DIY and gardening tools, childcare items, bags, accessories and a thousand other treasures. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, prices are low, negotiations cordial. An ideal moment to hunt for bargains without pretension while discovering an authentic village in northern Alsace. The community hall hosts some of the exhibitors, others setting up their stalls outdoors in the immediate area.
Gunstett is a small commune in the Bas-Rhin of around 500 inhabitants, located in the Haguenau-Wissembourg arrondissement, near Morsbronn-les-Bains and Woerth. It is part of the Outre-Forêt region, this geographical area located north of the Haguenau forest, historically marked by the battle of Woerth-Froeschwiller (1870) during the Franco-Prussian War. The village retains its rural Alsatian character with its half-timbered farms, storks and agricultural landscapes. The local associative dynamic allows the organisation each year of several festive and convivial events, including this May 1st flea market which gathers residents and bargain hunters from neighbouring communes.
