Grand annual Pentecost flea market in the medieval city of Mirepoix, bastide of Pays d'Olmes
The Grande Foire de Pentecôte de Mirepoix is one of the most anticipated events in the medieval city of Ariège. Every Pentecost weekend, the bastide of Mirepoix — with its central square with arcades unique in France — hosts over 50 exhibitors for an exceptional flea market. In the incomparable setting of the 13th-century medieval arcades, antique dealers, second-hand dealers, and individuals offer their finest finds for this Pentecost celebration.
Every Pentecost weekend, the bastide of Mirepoix dons its finest attire to host its Grande Foire de Pentecôte. This annual event, which attracts over 50 exhibitors from all over Languedoc and Ariège, is one of the most popular flea market events in the department, benefiting from the exceptional setting of the Place des Couverts in Mirepoix, considered one of the most beautiful medieval squares in France.
Mirepoix is a bastide founded in the 13th century by Simon de Montfort, rebuilt after a natural disaster (the collapse of the Puivert lake dam in 1279) by Guy de Lévis, Marshal of the Crusade against the Albigensians. Its Place des Couverts is a jewel of medieval architecture: surrounded by half-timbered houses and arcades from the 13th and 14th centuries, with grotesque sculptures adorning the beams of the facades, this square is classified as a Historic Monument. The Saint-Maurice cathedral, whose Gothic nave is one of the widest in France, completes this exceptional architectural picture.
The Grande Foire de Pentecôte de Mirepoix brings together over 50 exhibitors who set up their stands under the medieval arcades of the Place des Couverts and in the surrounding streets. The mix of professional second-hand dealers, antique dealers, and individuals guarantees a diverse offering: antique furniture (particularly rich in regional pieces from the 19th century), antique tableware and earthenware, collectible items (postcards, coins, collectible earthenware), textiles and embroidery, old books, decorative objects, and various curiosities.
Taking advantage of the Pentecost long weekend (Sunday and Monday), the Mirepoix market can extend over two to three days, allowing exhibitors to offer their goods to a renewed public. The Pentecost weekend is often associated with beautiful weekends in May-June, which encourages strolling under the medieval arcades and a high turnout of visitors.
Classified as a "City of Art and History", Mirepoix attracts many tourists each year who come to admire its exceptional medieval heritage. The Pentecost market naturally benefits from this tourist appeal, amplifying its attendance well beyond the Ariège clientele. Antique dealers and second-hand dealers know that visitors to Mirepoix are often discerning amateurs, sensitive to old objects and heritage. This informed clientele contributes to the market's good reputation and commercial dynamism.
