Annual grand flea market in the city center of La Ferté-Gaucher, a Briard city with nine centuries of markets
The La Ferté-Gaucher grand flea market is an unmissable event on the Briard calendar, traditionally organized on the 4th Sunday of April in the city center of this historic town in the Grand Morin valley. With fair, musical entertainment, and numerous exhibitors, it perpetuates a market tradition attested since 1177 in this city founded in the 11th century by a nobleman named Gaucher. A major event for bargain hunters and families, in a festive and commercial atmosphere.
Every year, on the 4th Sunday of April, the city center of La Ferté-Gaucher, a small town in the Grand Morin valley, transforms into a vast open-air bargain hunting ground to host its annual grand flea market. This event is part of a very long tradition: the La Ferté-Gaucher market is attested as early as 1177 by an official act, making it one of the oldest markets in Île-de-France, with nine centuries of uninterrupted commercial history.
Unlike many village garage sales, the La Ferté-Gaucher event is a real grand flea market, which brings together professional flea market dealers, private individuals emptying their attics, and fairground operators from a fair that accompanies the event. The streets of the city center fill with stands of all kinds, while musical entertainment punctuates the day, giving the whole a particularly festive atmosphere. Visitors stroll from stand to stand, stop in front of an interesting piece, negotiate prices with an exhibitor, before continuing their bargain hunt to the sound of an accordion or an itinerant orchestra.
La Ferté-Gaucher is a commune with a rich past. Its origin dates back to the early 11th century, when a lord named Gaucher, owner of vast domains in Brie, built a fortified place that he named "Fort de Gaucher". A priory was founded in the 12th century, dependent on the powerful abbeys of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes of Soissons and Molesmes. The city then became an important trading center of the Brie Champenoise, and still retains today its role as a small local capital.
The Grand Morin valley, where La Ferté-Gaucher extends, is one of the most beautiful Briard valleys, with its rich meadows, meanders, picturesque villages, and hiking trails. The local terroir is famous for Brie, the world-famous cheese that bears the name of the region. Visitors to the grand flea market can extend their day by exploring the surroundings: Coulommiers (homeland of the eponymous cheese), Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin and its Musée de la Vie d'autrefois, Verdelot, Jouy-sur-Morin, or Villeneuve-sur-Bellot.
The La Ferté-Gaucher grand flea market is particularly appreciated for its accessible and popular side. No fuss, no exorbitant prices, but a real provincial fair atmosphere where everyone finds their account. Professionals offer beautiful pieces of quality antiques and flea market items, private individuals sell everything and anything at modest prices, and fairground operators add their colorful touch.
The La Ferté-Gaucher grand flea market is held in the city center. Free admission for visitors. Access from Paris via the N4 or A4 (Coulommiers exit) then the D407. Parking in the adjacent streets and municipal parking lots.
