Every August 1st, the bastide of Barcelonne-du-Gers (32720) hosts its grand flea market and car boot sale, one of the most important events in the department. More than 300 exhibitors - individuals and professionals from the Grand Sud-Ouest - set up their stalls over 1.5 km in the streets of this 14th-century bastide, on the right bank of the Adour. Furniture, linens, tableware, tools, books, postcards, and unusual items: an authentic flea market and unpacking sale that delights bargain hunters from all over the region.
Every August 1st, the bastide of Barcelonne-du-Gers (32720) transforms into a huge open-air flea market. More than 300 exhibitors - individuals and professionals from all over the Grand Sud-Ouest - occupy the streets of the bastide for 1.5 kilometers. From 7:30 AM to 5 PM, bargain hunters explore this maze of stalls offering furniture, antique linens, tableware, tools, books, postcards, vintage clothing, and unusual items. This event is unanimously described as an 'authentic old-fashioned flea market and unpacking sale', where people come for the finds and the friendly atmosphere.
The organization imposes strict regulations to guarantee the authenticity of the event: only stalls well-stocked with second-hand items are allowed. The sale of new items, food (solid or liquid), plants, and animals is forbidden. This requirement ensures visitors a genuine flea market offering, far from markets disguised as new product sales. Exhibitors carefully prepare their stock: antique furniture, embroidered household linens, tools, books, records, vintage toys, tableware, and decorative items make up a complete panorama of traditional flea markets.
Founded around 1316 by an agreement between the prior of Saint-Gilles and the King of France Philip the Fair, the bastide of Barcelonne developed on the right bank of the Adour, opposite Aire-sur-l'Adour. Its grid plan, its eight main streets radiating from the square, and its ancient ramparts with four gates bear witness to its medieval past. Marked by the Wars of Religion - partially destroyed in 1569 by Montgomery's troops and then burned in 1591 - the bastide was gradually rebuilt and today retains an authentic Gascon charm.
The great flea market of Barcelonne-du-Gers has become an unmissable regional event for flea market enthusiasts from the Gers, neighboring Landes, and the entire Grand Sud-Ouest. The festival committee provides refreshments and takeaway food on site. Stall reservations can be made by phone at 05 62 09 47 24. The atmosphere is that of a large popular festival where flea market enthusiasts and strollers mingle in good spirits, between the stalls laden with treasures and the lively streets of the bastide.
