Annual street sale in Montélimar city center in September
Every September, the Grande Braderie de Montélimar transforms the city center into a vast open-air market. The pedestrian streets, squares, and shopping avenues are covered with stalls run by both local merchants selling off their collections and individuals participating in the traditional car boot sale that accompanies the event.
End-of-summer street sales are a tradition in French towns. Inspired by the famous Braderie de Lille, they mark the commercial return after the summer holidays. In Montélimar, the Grande Braderie sets the tone for the autumn season and brings together thousands of visitors each year from the surrounding towns of the southern Drôme and neighboring Ardèche.
The heart of Montélimar is particularly well-suited for this type of event. The Allées Provençales, Boulevard Marre-Desmarets, and the medieval alleys converging on the Place du Marché offer a lively and varied setting. The proximity of the Château des Adhémar, overlooking the town from its hill, adds a touch of prestige to the event. The nougat shops in the city center usually participate in the event, offering tastings and promotions.
September in Montélimar is often still very sunny, benefiting from the last heat of the Mediterranean summer. This autumnal mildness, characteristic of the Drôme climate, contributes to the success of the street sale: visitors can stroll for a long time in the streets without being bothered by the summer heat. It is also the period of the lavender harvest in the surrounding fields, giving the town a particularly pronounced Provençal atmosphere.
