Early morning bargain hunt in the Vimeu region
Every spring, Fressenneville hosts its annual flea market, an early morning rendezvous popular with bargain hunters from the Vimeu and the Picardy coast. From 6am onwards, exhibitors and visitors gather in the village streets to find a good deal in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This village brocante, organised by local volunteers, is part of the great Picard calendar of réderies and vide-greniers that pace the fine days in the Somme.
The Fressenneville flea market is one of those early morning rendezvous typical of maritime Picardy, where you come at dawn to make the first finds. The 6am opening is a tradition that appeals to the most seasoned bargain hunters: at that early hour, exhibitors are still setting up their stalls and the best pieces are still changing hands.
Fressenneville is a commune of just over 2,000 inhabitants located in the Vimeu, a small natural region in the south-west of the Somme, famous for its locksmithing and tap-making tradition. The organisation of the annual flea market is part of this tradition of community involvement.
As in most Somme village flea markets, you will find at Fressenneville an eclectic mix of private sellers emptying attics and cellars. Old furniture, crockery, household linen, toys, clothes, books, trinkets, tools, vinyl records and old postcards make up most of the offering.
The Fressenneville flea market is part of the rich calendar of réderies, vide-greniers and brocantes that enliven every weekend in the Somme between April and September. The refreshments and catering are essential elements of the event's success: chips, sausages, sandwiches and refreshing drinks await bargain hunters throughout the morning.
To fully enjoy the Fressenneville flea market, it is best to arrive early, ideally between 6am and 8am. Plan to bring cash in small denominations. A sturdy bag is essential to carry your finds, as well as clothes suited to the sometimes unpredictable Picard weather.
