The millennial Foire Souillarde of Beaulieu-lès-Loches, flea market, plants and entertainment for over 1000 years
The Foire Souillarde of Beaulieu-lès-Loches is one of the oldest fairs in France, celebrated for over a thousand years. It features a flea market, horticultural exhibition, plant sales, music, and entertainment, making it a day of exchange and sharing.
The Foire Souillarde of Beaulieu-lès-Loches is an exceptional event due to its longevity: over 1000 editions since its creation in the Middle Ages. This autumn fair brings together flea market vendors, horticulturists, nursery owners, and artisans in the streets of the medieval town. The flea market plays a significant role with numerous stalls offering furniture, tableware, trinkets, tools, books, clothing, collectibles, and curiosities. Plants, shrubs, bulbs, and local produce complement the offerings of this millennial fair.
The Foire Souillarde gets its name from the Berrichon term "souillard," meaning an outdoor storage or sales area. Established around the abbey of La Trinité founded by Foulques Nerra, it testifies to the commercial vitality of this small town since the 11th century. Beaulieu-lès-Loches, with its medieval alleys, Romanesque abbey, and half-timbered houses, offers a unique historical setting for this event.
The Foire Souillarde takes place on a Saturday in October, with free admission. Music, entertainment, and food stalls accompany this day of tradition and conviviality.
The 1021st Foire Souillarde returns on October 10, 2026, in Beaulieu-lès-Loches.
