The Foire de la Madeleine of July 22nd in Barre-des-Cévennes, car boot sale, producers and concerts
Every July 22nd, on Saint Madeleine's Day, Barre-des-Cévennes celebrates its traditional fair with a complete and generous program. The event combines a popular car boot sale, a local producers' market, and evening concerts, creating a festive and cultural day that draws residents from all the neighboring Cévennes valleys.
The car boot sale brings together individuals and small antique dealers in the village streets and squares. The producers' market offers Cévennes sheep cheeses, honey, jams, chestnuts, essential oils, medicinal plants, and organic products from the region. In the evening, the concerts give the fair a festive dimension that extends the festivities until nightfall.
The Feast of Mary Magdalene (Saint Mary Magdalene) is celebrated on July 22nd throughout Christendom. In the Cévennes, as in many rural French regions, ancient fairs and markets were often organized on the occasion of religious holidays. The Foire de la Madeleine of Barre-des-Cévennes perpetuates this centuries-old tradition that mixes religious festivity and commercial fair.
Barre-des-Cévennes (48400) is a village in Lozère located in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, in the Vallée Française valley. This village of black schist, with its austere and beautiful houses, is surrounded by chestnut trees, broom, and Cévennes scrubland. It benefits from a remarkable geographical location between the peaks of Mont Lozère and the Gorges du Gardon.
The Foire de la Madeleine returns to Barre-des-Cévennes (Lozère) on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, faithful to a centuries-old tradition held annually on Sainte-Madeleine's Day. Organized by the association Les Amis de la Foire de la Madeleine, it enlivens the entire center of the Cévennes village.
In the heart of the village of Barre-des-Cévennes, the Foire de la Madeleine brings together about forty stands: flea market, market of local artisans and producers, creators, booksellers and antique dealers. Bargain hunters find various objects, books, clothes as well as local Cévennes products (honey, goat's milk soaps, cheeses, jams, wines, herbal teas, schist objects).
The day is punctuated by musical entertainment, games and face painting for children, storytelling, a concert and on-site catering. Admission is free for visitors.
