Sunday winter flea market in Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames, a historic village of the Grand Morin valley
The Winter Flea Market of Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames opens the flea market season in Seine-et-Marne. This January Sunday gathering attracts bargain hunters and the curious from across the Grand Morin valley, delighted to rediscover, despite the cold, the pleasure of the stalls and the hunt. A village steeped in history where the famous actress Madeleine Brohan once lived and where Coquelin the Elder founded his retirement home for artists, Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames offers visitors an authentic heritage setting less than an hour from Paris.
In the January gloom, the Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames flea market offers a breath of fresh air to fans of antiques eager to return to the stalls after the holidays. This winter gathering, rare for the season in Seine-et-Marne, brings together exhibitors and visitors in a warm atmosphere where one comes both to hunt for bargains and to reconnect with village conviviality. Sunday 18 January 2026 has been chosen for this edition, which traditionally launches the flea market season in the Grand Morin valley.
Winter flea markets attract a particular crowd: seasoned bargain hunters who know that the low season often offers the best opportunities, methodical collectors searching for the missing piece, professional dealers coming to renew their stock. Less crowded than the great summer fairs, they allow calm exchanges with exhibitors, peaceful bargaining and real discoveries. Antique crockery, books, linens, vinyls, tools, small furniture and curios make up the core offering, along with items emerging from attics after the great New Year tidy-up.
A former millers' village at the confluence of the Grand Morin and a tributary, Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames has a cultural history that far exceeds its size. In the 19th century, the actress Madeleine Brohan built a castle there, later sold to Benoît Coquelin, known as Coquelin the Elder, a great actor, friend of Alexandre Dumas fils and creator of the role of Cyrano de Bergerac. Coquelin founded there the Maison de Retraite des Artistes Dramatiques Français, an emblematic institution still active today, a testament to the particular artistic vocation of this Brie village.
The town retains several notable buildings: its Saint-Georges church from the 12th and 16th centuries, its ancient bridges and its houses typical of traditional Brie architecture. The surroundings offer the pastoral charms of the Grand Morin valley, with its meanders, mills and towpaths. Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames is part of the Coulommiers canton and lies a few kilometres from Crécy-la-Chapelle, the medieval jewel nicknamed the Venice of Brie, and from Esbly, the region's railway gateway.
For visitors from Paris or Île-de-France, the January flea market provides an excellent excuse for a Sunday getaway in Brie. After bargain hunting, one can extend the day with a tour of the village, a walk along the Grand Morin, a detour to Crécy-la-Chapelle or to the abbey of Jouarre a little further north. Local gastronomy, with Brie de Meaux and Brie de Coulommiers as its flagships, will warm up bargain hunters around a hearty lunch.
The flea market is held in Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames (77860) on a Sunday in January. Free admission for visitors. For detailed information on the exact venue and registration terms, please contact the town hall or check specialised Seine-et-Marne flea market websites.
