End-of-summer flea market in a Brie village, on rue de la Mairie
Every year in late August, Bassevelle launches its traditional flea market on rue de la Mairie. In this village of the Brie champenoise, at the far east of Seine-et-Marne, almost on the border with the Marne department, the event brings together vendors and hunters from surrounding villages. A convivial day that nicely closes the summer season.
Bassevelle is a small commune in northeastern Seine-et-Marne, in the Brie des Morin, known for its rolling landscapes, cereal fields and agricultural tradition. With its church, typical Brie farms and stone houses, the village offers a preserved image of rural Seine-et-Marne. Its geographical position, away from major roads, makes it a peaceful place where life flows with the seasons. The annual flea market is one of the few moments of major animation in the village.
Held on rue de la Mairie, at the heart of the village, the flea market offers an intimate setting. Vendors, mostly locals and people from neighboring villages, display clothes, tableware, toys, small furniture, tools, books, trinkets and all sorts of items. The spirit is that of a real village: you meet your neighbors, chat, share a coffee or a drink while negotiating. Prices are gentle, in line with the simplicity of the place.
Typical finds at a village flea market like this one often come from the attics and outbuildings of Brie farms: vintage farm tools, old kitchen utensils, antique embroidered linens, country furniture, rustic tableware. For lovers of authentic objects and real patinas, it is a promising hunting ground, far from commercial flea markets where pieces are sometimes overpriced.
Extending the visit to Bassevelle with an exploration of the surroundings is an excellent idea. The Two Morins valley offers bucolic landscapes, charming villages such as La Ferté-Gaucher or Rebais, and several beautiful abbeys. It is an authentic rural region, still spared from urbanization, that charms lovers of quiet and authenticity.
The village being small, parking is naturally in adjacent streets. Bring cash for transactions. The morning is the ideal time to enjoy the best pieces. Bassevelle is about 1h15 from Paris via the N3 or A4 motorway, a bit more via country roads that let you cross the beautiful Brie countryside.
