Large spring flea market at the Espace André Millet in Avon, at the gateway to the Fontainebleau estate
Every year, usually in April, the Espace André Millet in Avon hosts the large municipal flea market. This event, one of the most anticipated of the local calendar, brings together individuals and bargain hunters around a simple and always effective principle: emptying the attic, finding good deals, sharing a convivial moment in this charming commune of southern Seine-et-Marne, which has so much in common with its neighbor Fontainebleau.
Unlike many flea markets held outdoors, Avon's takes place at the Espace André Millet, which eliminates the uncertainty of spring weather in the Paris region. This well-known municipal hall offers a comfortable setting for both exhibitors and visitors. The aisles are wide, the flow is smooth, and one can browse peacefully without fearing a sudden shower.
Avon forms an urban area almost inseparable from Fontainebleau, its world-famous neighbor for its castle and forest. But Avon has its own personality: lively town center, peaceful residential districts, former convents and historic buildings. The commune notably houses the Prieuré des Basses-Loges and the former tomb of Katherine Mansfield, the New Zealand writer who stayed there with Georges Gurdjieff. The flea market is a great opportunity to discover this town often in the shadow of Fontainebleau but rich in its own charm.
Stalls offer the usual range of quality flea markets: antique and vintage furniture, grandma's tableware, books and comics, vintage toys, vinyl records, clothing for the whole family, childcare items, small appliances, decorations and all kinds of trinkets. The proximity of Fontainebleau and its sometimes wealthier clientele regularly brings in fine quality pieces, especially in furniture and decorative arts.
One of the best ideas to fully enjoy a day in Avon is to combine visiting the flea market in the morning with a walk in the Fontainebleau forest or a tour of the Château de Fontainebleau in the afternoon. The castle, residence of French kings from François I to Napoleon III, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just a few minutes away. The forest, one of France's most famous, offers many trails and rocks to explore.
The flea market is traditionally held on a Saturday, allowing you to enjoy Sunday visiting the surroundings. Arrive early, bring cash, and check local listings for exact times.
