The great Bastille Day flea market on the banks of the Seine
Every 14 July, Bonnières-sur-Seine celebrates France's national day with a great flea market that takes over Place de la Libération and Place du Marché, at the heart of this bridge-town between the Yvelines and Normandy. From 7am to 6.30pm, private sellers and bargain hunters come together in a popular and family atmosphere, with on-site catering and one of the most affordable exhibitor rates in the department (€6 per linear metre).
While many towns hold their flea markets on an ordinary Sunday, Bonnières-sur-Seine chose to hold its great foire à tout on the national holiday itself. Every 14 July, Place de la Libération and Place du Marché fill with trestles, tarpaulins and blankets. Exhibitors set up from 5am and visitors flock in for a day of bargain hunting that often extends until the evening fireworks.
The Bonnières formula is simple and effective: no prior reservation, pitches are allocated on the spot from 5am at the very modest rate of €6 per linear metre. This format, now rare, allows private sellers who decide at the last minute to empty their garage or attic to take part without red tape. Professional antique dealers are welcome alongside private sellers, which adds to the diversity of the stalls.
As its name suggests, the foire à tout is not limited to second-hand objects: shoppers find crockery, furniture, clothes, books, toys, tools, small appliances, vinyl records and all kinds of curiosities. Savvy bargain hunters arrive early with cash and often leave with beautiful surprises at unbeatable prices.
Bonnières-sur-Seine is a small town of around 5,000 inhabitants at the westernmost end of the Yvelines department, on the border with Normandy. Crossed by the Seine, served by the A13 motorway and the Paris Saint-Lazare - Rouen train line, it is a convenient gateway between the Paris region and Normandy.
Catering is provided on site, so visitors can spend the whole day at the fair. Arriving early is advisable. A hat, water, plenty of small change and a sturdy bag are essential. End the day with a stroll along the banks of the Seine while waiting for the evening festivities.
