Sentein (09800) is a small municipality of 175 inhabitants belonging to the Couserans-Pyrénées Community of Communes, covering a vast territory of 59.18 km² with an extremely low population density – 3 inhabitants per km². The village is fully integrated into the perimeter of the Regional Natural Park of the Ariège Pyrenees and borders Spain.

The Notre-Dame de Sentein church, dating from the 12th-18th centuries, is the village's emblematic monument. This remarkable church testifies to the ancient settlement of this Pyrenean valley. The Lez river flows through the municipality, and several streams drain the surrounding mountain slopes. The Grotte de la Cigalère, 6.2 km away, is a natural cavity of regional importance.

Sentein has experienced several notable natural events – storms and major floods in 1982, 1992, and 2018. These climatic hazards are part of the mountainous reality of this high-altitude village. Mayor Marc-Henri Seube has presided over the destiny of this exceptional commune since 2020.
