Car boot sale in the village of Robert-Espagne, a martyred commune in the Saulx valley
The Car boot sale of Robert-Espagne takes place in this village in the Saulx valley, 13 km from Bar-le-Duc. Robert-Espagne, a commune of 766 inhabitants, carries the memory of the massacre of August 29, 1944, when 51 civilians were killed by the German army. Today, a rebuilt and lively village, it hosts an open-air car boot sale every year in its streets, between the Saulx river and the wooded hillsides, offering bargain hunters a peaceful and historically rich setting.
Every year in September, the village of Robert-Espagne hosts a car boot sale in its streets. Exhibitors offer their everyday objects, toys, clothes, crockery, and trinkets in a green setting, on the banks of the Saulx valley.
Robert-Espagne is sadly famous for the massacre of August 29, 1944, during which 51 civilians were executed by German soldiers of the 29th Panzergrenadier Regiment. This massacre, one of the six largest committed in France in 1944, also affected the neighboring communes of Couvonges, Beurey-sur-Saulx, Mognéville, and Trémont-sur-Saulx, resulting in a total of 86 victims. The village was largely destroyed: 200 out of 300 houses were burned down.
Today, Robert-Espagne is a rebuilt and dynamic village of 766 inhabitants, crossed by the Saulx, a tributary of the Marne. The inhabitants, known as the Tracanniers, perpetuate the duty of remembrance while animating local life. The car boot sale contributes to this communal vitality, bringing together residents and visitors in a warm atmosphere.
