The École du Chat Libre is a local association working for animal welfare on Belle-Île-en-Mer. All its resources — memberships, donations, subsidies from the four municipalities of the island, photo contests, car boot sales, and book sales — are entirely dedicated to the sterilization of stray cats. Its action contributes to regulating the island's feline population while respecting the animal.
Belle-Île-en-Mer, the largest of the Breton islands with its 85 km² and its four municipalities (Le Palais, Sauzon, Bangor, Locmaria), has a remarkably dense associative life for an island territory. Associations play an essential role in social cohesion and the animation of the island, particularly outside the summer season.
