Large flea market and car boot sale at the foot of the medieval fortress, in the Painters' Valley
The Brocante Vide-Greniers de Crozant, organized by the Comité des Fêtes, takes place every year in the main street of the village of this historic town overlooking the confluence of the Creuse and Sédelle rivers. With around 200 exhibitors, this major event attracts bargain hunters in an exceptional heritage setting, at the foot of the ruins of the medieval fortress of Crozant, a listed historic monument. Immortalized by Claude Monet, Armand Guillaumin and the painters of the École de Crozant, the Vallée des Peintres offers a spectacular backdrop to this popular day of treasure hunting.
The Brocante Vide-Greniers de Crozant is one of the largest in the Creuse department, with around 200 exhibitors set up in the main street of the village. Organized by the Comité des Fêtes, this event attracts thousands of visitors each year looking for antiques, furniture, tableware, trinkets, books, and collector's items at the foot of the ruins of the famous medieval fortress.
Built on a rocky outcrop at the confluence of the Creuse and Sédelle rivers, the fortress of Crozant was one of the most powerful strongholds in France in the Middle Ages. Its imposing ruins, listed as a historic monument since 1997, overlook a landscape of gorges and forests of striking beauty. A center of conflict between the Lusignans, Capetians, and Plantagenets, and idealized by George Sand, the fortress remains the symbol of the heritage richness of this region of Creuse.
From the mid-19th century to the 1930s, over 500 painters stayed in the Vallée des Peintres, giving birth to a pictorial movement known as the École de Crozant. Claude Monet, Armand Guillaumin, and many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscape painters immortalized the granite cliffs, the meanders of the Creuse, and the changing light of this wild valley. Visitors to the flea market can extend their day with a walk on the paths overlooking the gorges, rediscovering the viewpoints painted by these artists.
The Crozant flea market is also a popular festival with its fairground rides, refreshment stands, and on-site catering, creating a friendly and family atmosphere. Admission is free for visitors, and parking is available on the outskirts of the village. People with reduced mobility benefit from easy access.
