Every summer, the Comité des Fêtes d'Alba-la-Romaine takes over the streets and squares of this Ardèche Village of Character to organize its annual flea market and car boot sale. In this exceptional historical setting, dominated by the medieval castle and marked by two millennia of continuous history, bargain hunters and strollers gather around the stalls for a day of discoveries, leisurely strolls, and conviviality. Admission is free for visitors, in keeping with the event's popular and associative spirit.
Sellers—private individuals from the village and surrounding areas, as well as semi-professional dealers—offer a wide range of items: antique and vintage furniture, tableware and table arts, linens and clothing, books and documents, tools and agricultural equipment, ceramics and pottery, trinkets and souvenirs, collectibles, and unusual pieces. The diversity of offerings matches the richness of the site's heritage.
Alba-la-Romaine is a commune of about 1,500 inhabitants in southern Ardèche, located at the foot of the Coiron massif, between Montélimar and Aubenas. Classified as a Village of Character in Ardèche, it is one of the most remarkable communes in the department, at the crossroads of ancient history and medieval architecture.
In Roman times, Alba was known as Alba Helviorum: the capital of the Helviens, a Romanized Gaulish people who inhabited this territory of Gallia Narbonensis. A prosperous city in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, it had a forum, thermal baths, an amphitheater, and a remarkable ancient theater whose tiers could accommodate up to 3,000 spectators. This remarkably well-preserved theater is today one of the most important archaeological monuments in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
The MuséAl archaeological museum displays the numerous discoveries made on the site: mosaics, sculptures, ceramics, everyday objects, and architectural elements bear witness to the richness of the ancient city. The medieval village, which developed above the Roman ruins, features characteristic black basalt and white limestone checkerboard facades, typical of the vernacular architecture of the Coiron.
As the organizer of the flea market and car boot sale, the Comité des Fêtes d'Alba-la-Romaine is one of the key associations in village life. Throughout the year, it is responsible for local entertainment—countryside meals, patron saint festivals, seasonal events—helping to maintain social cohesion in this village that welcomes many tourists each year to discover its exceptional heritage.
The summer flea market is part of the tradition of Ardèche village festivals that liven up the communes during the peak tourist season. It takes advantage of the summer influx to attract a wider audience than just the permanent residents: holidaymakers in campsites or rentals, second-home owners, and tourists passing through between Montélimar and the Gorges de l'Ardèche.
Admission is free for visitors. Sellers wishing to participate can contact the Comité des Fêtes d'Alba-la-Romaine. The event is generally held in the center of the village, near the castle and picturesque alleys. It is advisable to check the exact dates with the town hall or the Comité des Fêtes, as the precise arrangements vary from one edition to another.
