Flea market of May 8th in Saint-Pourcain-sur-Besbre
Saint-Pourcain-sur-Besbre is a small commune in the Besbre valley, in the northeast of the Allier department. Not to be confused with its famous namesake, Saint-Pourcain-sur-Sioule, this commune bears the name of the same evangelizing saint of Bourbonnais but is located in a completely different area of the department.
The Besbre is one of the main rivers in northern Allier. It flows through a landscape of rolling bocage, dotted with castles—Bourbonnais boasts a remarkable density of seigneurial residences along the Besbre. Saint-Pourcain-sur-Besbre is part of this heritage and pastoral landscape.
May 8th, a public holiday of commemoration, is traditionally a day for flea markets and car boot sales in the Allier department. The Saint-Pourcain-sur-Besbre flea market is part of this spring tradition, bringing together the local inhabitants around the stalls.
