In 1853, at the peak of this industry, no less than 23 millstone companies employed between 1,500 and 2,000 workers, and produced more than 20,000 millstones per year, exported worldwide. The millstone workers were nicknamed "the blue hands", because flint penetrated their skin. This exceptional history has left the city with a unique industrial heritage.

Geographically, La Ferté-sous-Jouarre occupies a remarkable position, at the confluence of the Marne and Petit Morin rivers, about 75 km east of Paris.
