The Chevry-en-Sereine garage sale is one of those local events that embody the soul of rural Seine-et-Marne. Far from the hustle and bustle of large urban flea markets, it offers an intimate and authentic setting where village residents and neighboring communes meet each year for a day of bargain hunting and conviviality. Stands are set up in the village center, in a preserved setting that gives the event a special charm. You can find everything: antique furniture, tableware, trinkets, toys, clothes, tools, books, and sometimes beautiful surprises at the bottom of boxes.
Chevry-en-Sereine is a small commune in Seine-et-Marne with a little over 500 inhabitants, called Chevriots. Its history dates back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the discovery of polishing stones on the communal territory. In the 9th century, a church already existed in Chevry, dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre, as attested by a document from 884 confirming a privilege of Pope Nicholas I.
The architectural heritage of Chevry-en-Sereine is remarkably rich for a village of this size. The 17th-century castle, built around 1633 under Louis XIII for Charles Duret, Comptroller General of Finances, dominates the commune and bears witness to the past prestige of the place. The building suffered significant damage in 1814 during the passage of the Cossacks during the Battle of Montereau, but it still retains all its prestige today. The village church, with its murals and external enclosure with its brick piles, was classified as a historic monument by decree on February 16, 1990.
Chevry-en-Sereine has a long tradition of commercial events. In 1545, the lord of the place already obtained from Francis I the authorization to fortify the village, establish two annual fairs there and hold a weekly market.
Participating in the Chevry-en-Sereine garage sale means enjoying a break in the countryside, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities. The village, located in the south of Seine-et-Marne, offers a soothing green setting.
