Montségur is world-renowned for its 13th-century Cathar castle and the memory of the 1244 siege. The annual flea market is part of the festive life of this emblematic village, allowing visitors to combine treasure hunting with the discovery of Cathar heritage.

The Brocante de Montségur: Treasure Hunting Below the Cathar Citadel

At the foot of the pog de Montségur, the limestone rock on which stands the most famous Cathar citadel in France, the village of Montségur hosts its flea market every year. This event takes on a very special dimension in this place steeped in history, where the echoes of the 13th-century Cathar tragedy mingle with the conviviality of Ariège village gatherings.

Montségur, Symbol of Occitan Catharism

Montségur (09300) is a village of 116 inhabitants located in the Ariège Pyrenees massif, between 630 and 2,365 meters above sea level. The commune is world-renowned for its 13th-century Cathar castle, a listed historic monument, and for the siege of 1244 during which more than two hundred Cathars perished at the stake rather than renounce their faith.

March 16th is commemorated each year by pilgrims from all over Europe, perpetuating the memory of this founding episode in Occitan history. The castle of Montségur, accessible by a hiking trail from the village, offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Pyrenees and the hills of the Pays d'Olmes.

The village belongs to the Communauté de Communes du Pays d'Olmes and is integrated into the perimeter of the Réserve Naturelle Régionale Embeyre. The current mayor, Nicolas Digoudé, has presided over the destiny of this exceptional commune since 2020.

The Flea Market, a Village Event

The annual flea market of Montségur brings together private exhibitors and professionals attracted by the site's reputation. The stalls offer a varied selection: regional furniture, antique objects, books and documents, ceramics, trinkets and curiosities. The uniqueness of the location attracts curious visitors, who come as much for the treasure hunting as for the discovery of Cathar heritage.

The organization of the flea market is handled by local volunteers, keen to keep their village alive and vibrant throughout the year. The event is part of the commune's tourism attractiveness policy, which welcomes many visitors each year to discover the history and landscapes of Montségur.

Hiking and Heritage: A Complete Weekend

The flea market can be part of a weekend exploring the riches of the Pays d'Olmes. The climb to the castle of Montségur (about 1 hour 15 minutes round trip) is an essential stop. Nearby, the villages of Lavelanet and Mirepoix offer their respective charms. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to satisfy their adventurous spirit on the region's hiking trails.
