Grand street sale on the Place d'Armes of Phalsbourg
The Braderie de Phalsbourg takes place on May 8th on the Place d'Armes of this city fortified by Vauban. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., exhibitors take over this historic square for a day of bargain hunting in the open air. Organized by Le Placier, entry is free. Phalsbourg, a garrison town founded in 1570, is famous for its Vauban fortifications and its role in Lorraine's military history. The Place d'Armes, a vast esplanade in the heart of the city, offers a majestic setting for this spring street sale.
Every May 8th, the Place d'Armes in Phalsbourg hosts its grand annual street sale. Under the ramparts of the city fortified by Vauban, exhibitors set up their stalls for a day of bargain hunting in an exceptional historic setting.
Founded in 1570 by Count Palatine George-John of Veldenz, Phalsbourg was fortified by Vauban in the 17th century. The city has retained its monumental gates (Porte de France and Porte d'Allemagne) and its ramparts, which give it an imposing military silhouette. The Place d'Armes, at the geometric center of the city, is lined with classical buildings and shops. It is the natural gathering place for the street sale.
Phalsbourg is also the birthplace of Emile Erckmann, who, with Alexandre Chatrian, formed the famous literary duo Erckmann-Chatrian, authors of popular novels about 19th-century Lorraine and Alsace. The Erckmann-Chatrian museum retraces the work of these writers, adding a cultural dimension to a visit to Phalsbourg.
