Autumn browsing in the Vienne valley
Bonnes is a small commune of around 1,250 inhabitants in the Vienne valley, midway between Chauvigny (10 km south) and Châtellerault (25 km north). Remarkable heritage: 12th-15th-century medieval castle overlooking the Vienne, Romanesque-origin Saint-Hilaire church, old houses. In this historical setting the late-September fair takes place.
Bonnes castle, though largely in ruins, keeps impressive towers and curtain walls testifying to its medieval strategic importance. It housed several Poitou and Touraine noble families, notably the Parthenay-LarchevĂŞque lords. The castle silhouette rises above the Vienne and offers a unique backdrop.
The Vienne valley between Chauvigny and Châtellerault is a major heritage axis: castles, Romanesque churches, character villages, natural sites. Bonnes sits centrally, between Chauvigny (famous five fortresses) and Châtellerault (sub-prefecture with industrial and cultural heritage).
A must-see if passing through Bonnes. This medieval town on a promontory houses five fortresses (Donjon de Gouzon, Château Baronnial, Château d'Harcourt, Tour de Flins, Château de Montléon) — a European rarity. Saint-Pierre Collegiate with Romanesque carved capitals completes the exceptional heritage. Don't miss Géant du Ciel raptor show and Chauvigny Velo-Rail.
