The back-to-school car boot sale in Banyuls

The Banyuls-sur-Mer September Car Boot Sale is a back-to-school tradition in this famous wine-growing commune. Jointly organized by two emblematic local associations, the Foment de la Sardana (which perpetuates the Catalan tradition of the sardana dance) and the Aviron Banyulenc (the historic rowing club of the commune), it takes place on the seafront or more specifically at the Impasse de la Sardane, next to the Banyuls town hall. The proceeds from the pitches contribute to financing the activities of these two associations which animate the cultural and sporting life of Banyuls all year round.

A living Catalan tradition

The Foment de la Sardana is one of the oldest associations in Banyuls-sur-Mer. Its mission: to keep alive and pass on the sardana, a traditional Catalan dance performed in a circle, accompanied by a cobla (a traditional orchestra composed of brass and woodwind instruments). The Aviron Banyulenc, on the other hand, offers rowing activities at sea in the bay of Banyuls. This car boot sale is an important moment for these two clubs, which take the opportunity to meet the public and make their activities known.

September is one of the most beautiful months to visit Banyuls-sur-Mer: the summer heat is tempered, the grape harvest takes place in the terraced vineyards overlooking the sea, and the resort returns to a quieter pace after the summer effervescence. The car boot sale is the ideal opportunity for visitors to discover Banyuls outside the tourist season, while enjoying a day of treasure hunting by the sea, followed perhaps by a tasting of the AOC Banyuls natural sweet wines in one of the many cellars of the commune.
