Ascension Day Car Boot Sale in the streets of Achicourt, on the outskirts of Arras
Achicourt, a town of 7,000 inhabitants just south of Arras, organizes its car boot sale every year on Ascension Day, a public holiday perfect for strolls and bargain hunting. Rue Raoul Briquet, one of the main arteries of the town, transforms into a large open-air market where individuals and exhibitors offer furniture, clothing, toys, crockery, books, and objects of all kinds.
Achicourt is a popular suburb of Arras, historically linked to industry and railways. Rue Raoul Briquet – named after a former socialist mayor – runs through a residential area where early 20th-century brick houses open directly onto the sidewalks. The car boot sale is set up in front of the facades, creating a typical neighborhood street sale atmosphere of the Nord–Pas-de-Calais region.
The choice of Ascension Day – generally in May – allows families to take advantage of the long weekend to hunt for bargains in a relaxed atmosphere. The pleasant spring weather and the relaxed atmosphere of the public holiday contribute to the festive mood of this popular flea market day.
