The 18th Rafrot Fair — Gambetta College PTA, Carentan-les-Marais
The Gambetta College PTA organises the 18th Rafrot Fair in Carentan-les-Marais (50500). A popular event rooted in the Norman tradition of rural car boot sales, this 'rafrot' fair — a Norman term for bric-a-brac and second-hand goods — brings together the Cotentin marshland community around private seller stalls.
The 18th Rafrot Fair is organised by the Gambetta College PTA in Carentan-les-Marais (50500). The Norman term rafrot — meaning bric-a-brac, old objects and second-hand goods — gives this event its local identity and roots in Cotentin popular tradition. Now in its 18th edition, the Rafrot Fair has become one of the unmissable events in the associative life of Carentan.
The PTA organises this event to fund educational activities and school trips for the college students. Exhibitors — local private sellers from Carentan-les-Marais and surrounding Cotentin marshland villages — offer their treasures: furniture and household items, crockery, clothing for all ages, toys, books, tools, ornaments and curiosities.
Carentan-les-Marais (50500) is a commune best known for its historic role during the Normandy Landings in June 1944 — the town was liberated by American paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division. The Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands, classified as a Regional Natural Park, are one of the most important wetlands in north-western France.
