The Great May 1st Fair of Montlebon: a tradition of the Haut-Doubs

In Montlebon (25500), a commune in the Haut-Doubs located 2 km south of Morteau, the Great May 1st Fair is much more than a simple car boot sale: it is an event anchored in the local calendar for decades, a tradition that marks the opening of the spring season in the Morteau valley. In 2025, the fair celebrated its 33rd edition, confirming its deep roots in local life.

A fair combining traveling merchants and flea market sellers

The Great May 1st Fair of Montlebon welcomes traveling merchants and private flea market sellers in the Place de l'École and Salle des Fêtes. This coexistence between traditional traveling commerce and second-hand hunting gives the event a unique and authentic character, reminiscent of the rural fairs of yesteryear that punctuated the life of mountain villages. A maximum of thirty exhibitors are welcomed in the square, ensuring a human scale and a friendly atmosphere.

Organization and registration

Exhibitor setup begins at 6:30 am and must be completed before 8 am. The fair is open to the public from 7 am to 5 pm, with free admission. As the number of spots is limited to 30, registrations must be made before April 26th with the organizer Alain Jacquet. Late registration and refusal of a spot due to lack of booking are frequent, so it is strongly advised to register early.

Montlebon, a village in the Val de Morteau at the foot of the Saut du Doubs

Montlebon is a village of some 2,000 inhabitants in the Haut-Doubs, 2 km south of Morteau on the road to Saut du Doubs. Dominated by the coniferous forests and high-altitude meadows typical of the Haut-Doubs, the village benefits from an exceptional natural environment. The May 1st fair is an opportunity for visitors to discover Montlebon and its surroundings, including the famous Saut du Doubs a few kilometers away.
