Annual car boot sale in the Vauban citadel of Mont-Dauphin, a UNESCO World Heritage site
The Mont-Dauphin car boot sale is held every May 8th in the Vauban citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The pitch is offered at 3 euros per meter. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., bargain hunters stroll through this exceptional military site, perched on a rocky promontory at an altitude of 1,050 meters, overlooking the confluence of the Durance and the Guil. A unique setting in France for a car boot sale.
Every May 8th, the citadel of Mont-Dauphin, a masterpiece by Vauban classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, hosts a car boot sale in a unique historical and landscape setting. Stalls are set up within the ramparts of this fortress built from 1693 onwards, offering bargain hunters an exceptional route between bastions, barracks, and esplanades.
Perched on a rocky promontory at an altitude of 1,050 meters, at the confluence of the Durance and the Guil, the Mont-Dauphin citadel was built by Vauban after the invasion by the Duke of Savoy in 1692. The fortress, never completed, retains its imposing ramparts, barracks, church, powder magazine, and guardhouses. Since 2008, it has been part of the Vauban fortifications network inscribed on the World Heritage list.
Exhibitors offer a wide range of second-hand items: antique tableware, trinkets, frames and mirrors, books and magazines, toys, clothes, small appliances, tools, sports equipment, vinyl records and CDs, home linen, and decorative objects. In the Hautes-Alpes, you can also regularly find typical mountain items: old agricultural tools, cowbells, Savoyard furniture, vintage skis, snowshoes, and hiking equipment. Prices, generally very attractive, make these car boot sales an economical and ecological alternative to buying new.
The Hautes-Alpes department, the least populated in metropolitan France, compensates for its low density with a particularly dynamic associative life. From March to October, car boot sales and flea markets punctuate the life of Alpine villages, offering as many opportunities to hunt for treasures as to meet neighbors. The summer season, with the influx of tourists and holidaymakers, multiplies the opportunities: passing visitors are happy to stop and rummage through the stalls, sometimes discovering unsuspected Alpine treasures. The exceptional mountain setting of the department adds a unique dimension to these events, with grandiose panoramas and the pure air of the summits.
The Mont-Dauphin car boot sale offers a rare opportunity to hunt for treasures in a living historical monument, with a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding valleys and Alpine peaks. The pitch at 3 euros per meter attracts local exhibitors and passing visitors.
