The great late-June flea market in the city of Impressionist painters
Every year at the end of June, the town of Bougival holds its traditional Saint John's Day flea market, which stretches along Avenue de la Gare and brings together between 100 and 200 private exhibitors from 8am to 6pm. In the heart of this riverside town, famous for inspiring Bizet, Turner, Monet and Renoir, the event has become one of the most popular summer gatherings for bargain hunters from the western Paris region.
Every year, the town of Bougival organises its great Saint John's Day flea market at the end of June, which has become one of the must-attend events for bargain hunters in the western Paris region. The event stretches along Avenue de la Gare, near the town centre, and brings together between 100 and 200 private exhibitors from 8am to 6pm.
Organised by the Town of Bougival and supervised by the municipal police, this flea market follows strict rules to ensure smooth operation. Registration is done exclusively at the municipal police station on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9am to noon, in the weeks leading up to the event. The rate is €10 per linear metre, and exhibitors must bring their own equipment as nothing is provided on site.
The particularity of Bougival's flea market is that it is reserved exclusively for private sellers, guaranteeing an authentic bargain-hunting offer: objects from attics, children's clothing, toys, crockery, small furniture, books, records and curiosities. Professional antique dealers are not admitted.
Bougival is no ordinary town. This small town of 8,500 inhabitants on the banks of the Seine was, in the 19th century, a high point of Parisian leisure and Impressionist painting. Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro set up their easels here; Georges Bizet composed Carmen here; Turgenev, Viardot and Corot held their salons here. The famous guinguettes of La Grenouillère inspired some of the most iconic paintings of modern art.
After bargain hunting, visitors can extend their day by discovering the many charms of Bougival: the Datcha (Turgenev's house, a listed historical monument), the Bizet house, the riverside walks and the picturesque passages of the old village.
