A summer evening of cool-weather bargain hunting in a north-western Tarn village
The small village of Montirat, perched in the north-west of the Tarn among the hills of the Ségala, hosts an original flea market each summer: a night edition. Taking advantage of evening coolness, sellers and bargain hunters gather in the village centre after hours for a friendly experience that differs from the traditional Sunday mornings. Run by the festivities committee, this summer event combines cool-weather browsing, refreshments and a village atmosphere.
While almost all flea markets take place on Sunday mornings, Montirat has gone bold: staging its event in the evening, in the cool of a summer day. This night format makes real sense: in midsummer heat, browsing under 35°C sun is far from pleasant. Late afternoon and evening, on the other hand, offer a much more comfortable setting — and a distinctive, almost festive mood.
Montirat is a small commune in the north-west of the Tarn, on the edge of Aveyron, in the rolling Ségala landscape. Far from major routes and cities, the village belongs to an unspoilt rural area where every event matters to keep social life and local activity alive. The Comité Permanent des Fêtes de Montirat, based at Le Loubal, orchestrates the village's highlights throughout the year.
Beyond the kinder temperatures, the night flea market has its specifics: soft lighting on stalls, evening refreshments and food, an event that sometimes stretches into the night. The mood, much more relaxed than at morning flea markets, feels more like a village party than a race for bargains. People browse, chat, have a drink, eat on site. Families linger longer, children play while parents explore the stalls.
Like any rural flea market, Montirat's gathers mainly private sellers from the village and nearby communes. You'll find a bit of everything: clothing, toys, books, crockery, vinyl records, trinkets, small furniture, tools, DIY supplies, decoration. The main appeal lies as much in the pleasure of hunting as in the social side of the event: it is an opportunity for villagers to meet up and share a moment.
A trip to Montirat is a chance to explore a lesser-known part of the department: the north-west Tarn, its hills, its stone villages, its proximity to Aveyron and the Rouergue. A few kilometres away you can visit Carmaux, Pampelonne, or push on to Cordes-sur-Ciel, one of the finest bastides in France. A true land of discovery for visitors.
