Annual car boot sale on the Maréchal de la Palice esplanade in Lapalisse
Every second Sunday of June, the Maréchal de la Palice esplanade hosts the Vide-grenier des Bords de Besbre. This remarkable setting, at the foot of the Château de La Palice — a historic residence classified as a historical monument and inhabited by the same family since the 11th century —, offers an exceptional setting for this day of treasure hunting by the Besbre river.
The Château de La Palice, which majestically overlooks the town of Lapalisse, is one of the heritage treasures of the Allier. This medieval fortress, transformed into a Renaissance residence, was home to Jacques II de Chabannes, lord of La Palice, whose name remains in the French language. The car boot sale takes place at its feet, offering visitors a unique architectural panorama while browsing the stalls.
The Besbre, a tributary of the Loire, flows through Lapalisse in a green and peaceful setting. The Maréchal esplanade, a vast area developed along the river, is an ideal location for a car boot sale: open space, trees offering shade, proximity to water, and a view of the castle. From 7:30 AM to 7 PM, treasure hunters enjoy this long day to alternate between searching the stalls and strolling along the river.
Lapalisse occupies a strategic position on the former national road 7, at the crossroads of routes leading to the Montagne Bourbonnaise, Vichy, and Moulins. This crossroads location makes it a place of passage and convergence that benefits the attendance of the car boot sale. The small town retains a vibrant commercial heritage and a lively rural town atmosphere.
