Garage sale associated with the annual Ranchal fair, a village in the Haut-Beaujolais hills between Amplepuis and Cours-la-Ville
The Ranchalaise Fair Garage Sale is a popular event held each spring in Ranchal, a Haut-Beaujolais village perched in the Beaujolais hills at the pass linking Amplepuis to Cours-la-Ville. Associated with the village's traditional fair, the garage sale attracts sellers and visitors from the surrounding area — Thizy-les-Bourgs, Amplepuis, Cours-la-Ville — and from the Lyon metropolitan area. It is an authentic and convivial event, typical of the rural fairs of the Haut-Beaujolais, where the usual garage-sale items mingle with local and artisan products offered at the fair.
The Ranchalaise Fair Garage Sale is inseparable from the Ranchal Fair, a traditional event that has punctuated the life of this small Haut-Beaujolais village for many decades. Each spring, the village comes alive and welcomes sellers, craftspeople, local producers and bargain hunters from neighbouring communes and the Lyon area. The garage sale complements the fair by offering a selection of second-hand items at reduced prices.
Ranchal is a village of a few hundred inhabitants in the Beaujolais hills, at the pass linking Amplepuis (to the east, Rhône side) to Cours-la-Ville (to the west, Loire side). At an altitude of over 700 metres, the village offers stunning panoramas over the Beaujolais valleys and the Massif Central uplands. It is a land of hedgerows, meadows and forests, renowned for its tranquility and unspoilt landscapes.
The Ranchal Fair perfectly illustrates the vitality of the Rhône's small rural communes which, despite their modest populations, maintain ancestral festive and commercial traditions. These rural fairs are essential fixtures for maintaining social bonds in the countryside, allowing residents of isolated hamlets and villages to meet, exchange, do business and share a convivial moment.
The Haut-Beaujolais — or Green Beaujolais — is the north-western part of the Rhône department, characterised by its hills, forests, meadows and characterful villages. Unlike the viticultural Bas-Beaujolais, the Haut-Beaujolais is more a land of livestock farming and bocage. Communes such as Ranchal, Thizy, Cours-la-Ville and Amplepuis perpetuate ancient rural and artisan traditions, where fairs and markets still play a structuring role in local economic and social life.
