Car boot sale during the Strawberry and Flowers Festival of Vergt, capital of the Périgord strawberry
Every year in May, the town of Vergt celebrates its agricultural heritage with the Strawberry and Flowers Festival, a flagship event of central Périgord. On the program for this great festive day: a strawberry market, a flower market, a gourmet market, a creators' market and, of course, a car boot sale that enlivens the town center. Exhibitors offer their second-hand items to bargain hunters at a rate of €2.50 per linear meter.
Vergt is a town of about 1,600 inhabitants located in the heart of central Périgord, between Périgueux and Bergerac. The town was for a long time the leading French center for strawberry production, an agricultural tradition dating back to the 19th century. Although production has decreased, the memory of this glorious era lives on through this annual festival which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the Dordogne.
The Strawberry and Flowers Festival is not limited to the car boot sale. The event features the exhibition of the giant tart, an emblematic gourmet tradition, culinary workshops led by the hotel school, an exhibition of vintage vehicles, competitions of Poitou mules and draft horses, carousels and workshops for children, an exhibition of drawings by schoolchildren and food trucks in all the squares.
The festival also hosts a village of communes, a space where local authorities from the canton present their initiatives and assets. A painting exhibition by the AVEC workshop completes the cultural offering of this day full of discoveries.
