Sale in the lanes of the Provencal village on Victory Day
Every May 8th, the Pignans Merchants and Craftsmen Association (A.C.A.P.) takes over the historic village centre with a friendly flea market. Provencal lanes, the Notre-Dame church and the village square welcome private exhibitors and chiners in the mild atmosphere of the Var spring.
Located between Brignoles and the Var coast, at the gates of the Maures, Pignans is a typical Provencal village whose historic centre preserves its ochre-toned facades and narrow lanes. Every May 8th, Victory Day public holiday, the A.C.A.P. organises a flea market that takes over these lanes.
Pignans particularity: it is not a leisure association but the grouping of village merchants and craftsmen that runs the event. Their goal is twofold: to make the historic centre live on a public holiday, and to federate residents and exhibitors around a popular event.
The flea market gathers mainly private individuals from the village and surrounding towns, offering classic bric-a-brac: clothes, toys, books, crockery, knick-knacks. A.C.A.P. merchants take advantage of the event to set up their stands.
Pignans surprises with its heritage treasures: the collegiate church of Notre-Dame de Pignans with its imposing bell tower, the remains of medieval fortifications, the sloping lanes leading to former village gates.
The A.C.A.P. organises two flea markets a year: the May 8th one and a second in late spring (often May 21st). Each edition confirms the Var public's loyalty to this human-scale village sale format.
