Moncontour, historic Loudunais bourg
Name from its hill (mons-contour = 'hill of the bend'). Strategic position, once an important military bourg. Medieval keep classified as Historic Monument — one of France's tallest (over 30m), 11th-12th centuries. Square keep with massive walls, one of northern Vienne's unsung heritage gems.
Saint-Martin church (12th c.), old houses, peaceful village-core atmosphere. Part of Pays Loudunais Community of Communes.
Extending the visit
Visit the keep a must. Loudun (10 km) square tower, Sainte-Croix collegiate, Monts-sur-Guesnes castle, Haut-Poitou vineyards south. Local delicacies: Montmorillon macaron (south) or Poitou chabichou AOP goat cheese.
